Building on the Rock vs. Sand

n Mat 7:24 ~ 27 we can see the story of “the wise builder”.

There’re two types of builders, one is building a house on the rock, the other is building a house on the sand.

what does it mean “building a house?”

⁃ Giving my whole life to the Lord

⁃ Living by the guidance of Holy Spirit

1. What does the rock refer to?

If we build a house on the rock it will not fall whether the rain falls, the floods come or the wind beats on that house, which means it is long-lasting. Considering the whole process of building a house on the rocks, it will take time, patience, a lot of effort, focus and thorough planning.

So, the rock would be

Faith

Jesus

Truth

Love of Jesus

Relationship with the Lord

Fearing the Lord

2. What is the sand?

On the other hand, if we build a house on the sand, it’ll be so easy, quick to build, even it doesn’t require much preparation. However that makes the house so vulnerable, for example, the rain, floods and wind will destroy it in the blink of an eye!

So, the sand would be

False faith

My feelings and thoughts

Conceit

3. what is the rain, floods and wind?

These are things that try to make us detached from God.

Temptation

Test

Doubt

Needs

Financial problems

4. How can we apply this teaching to our daily lives?

Jesus said that everyone who came to him and heard his words and did them, he would be a person who built a house on the rock. What Jesus said is that we have to live by his words. As a child of God, what Jesus taught us is rules of our lives.

Of course living in him(the rock) is not an easy process. As we discussed it takes time, effort, patience and dedication!

But faith would be two ways, building a house on the rock
